The real power of digital collections lies in their potential accessibility to a target audience. This, however, assumes the target audience knows about the resource and how to access it. This is where marketing becomes essential. In the Web 2.0 era it is vital to understand the tools available to you to get your digital collections “out there” to the audience you want to reach.

Jamaaludeen uniquely combines an in-depth knowledge of and background in technology with psychology and human behaviour to equip participants to reach the audience they want to reach.

What content will be covered?

The masterclass covers the importance and impact of marketing digital collections. It will premise on the Web 2.0 paradigm and it’s dynamics and newly-found opportunities. Discovery and access tools will be covered. We will look at building collections that can be easily navigated, and which allow for serendipitous discoveries. We will cover the different types and degrees of marketing, understanding users, and how to build and support a committed community. The Harvard Open Collections Program will also be presented as a Case Study.

What will I gain?

At the end of the masterclass you will understand the huge responsibility and opportunity for marketing digital collections. You will understand how to increase the availability and use of archived and historical resources for teaching, learning, and research. You will leave the masterclass with relevant information, as well as resources and reference material.

Jamaal is passionate about the social web and educating people on it’s virtues and capabilities.  He has a broad and accessible contextual and technical knowledge but is also extremely patient…
